Cotton made in Africa
The Cotton made in Africa initiative takes a business-driven approach to combating poverty and promoting environmental protection in Africa. It is managed by the Aid by Trade Foundation, founded in 2005 by Dr. Michael Otto, and involves a strategic alliance of partners from trade, industry, the public sector, and non-governmental organizations. Cotton made in Africa teaches smallholder farmers in Benin, Burkina Faso, Mozambique, and Zambia how to improve cotton crop yields using new cultivation techniques – and thus free themselves from the poverty trap. Partner textile companies buy and process cotton produced using sustainable farming methods. Find out more at cottonmadeinafrica.org.
Otto International encourages customers and their suppliers to use CmiA and helps them to avoid extra costs. Mills have to be registered and included in the process. The use of CmiA has to be fully traceable back to the cotton fields.
